Da Capo is performing three concerts in Minsk, at the Belarussian Musical Autumn festival, on November 25, 27, and 29, 2003. The project is a collaboration with composers Alla Borzova and Alexander Dmitriev, who are from Belarus and Russia and are now Americans. Thirteen performers, including composers Ms. Borzova and Mr. Dmitriev, will be performing 18 chamber music works, featuring new American music as well as pieces by Borzova and Dmitriev.
Our invitation comes from the Belarussian State Philharmonic, which has sponsored international festivals for 29 years and has presented such artists as David Oistrakh, Isaak Stern, Yehudi Menuhin, and Svjatoslav Richter. The letter of invitation states that the Philharmonic will:
"be happy to become acquainted with the new compositions of Alla Borzova and Alexander Dmitriev, who received their musical training in Belarus and Russia, had been active members of the Belarussian Composers' Union, and had been teaching at the Belarussian Academy of Music and the Belarussian Institute of Culture before their departure to the U.S."
Da Capo has enjoyed stimulating musical collaborations with Alla Borzova, performing her music on numerous occasions. The Belarus project is a natural and exciting development from this collaboration. This project will be our first with Alexander Dmitriev, and we look forward to becoming familiar with his music.
The members of Da Capo firmly believe that frequent artistic collaborations of a high level of intensity will increase the understanding and rapport between peoples of diverse cultures. Our performance in Moscow last April for the Moscow Forum Festival (at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory) was an important step in furthering this exploration of cultures. The performances in Minsk will be a continuation of our work toward these important goals.
This project is being sponsored in part by the Trust for Mutual Understanding.
